Competition Guidelines

GENERAL PROCEDURE

Every year, the Eskan Bank Committee will decide on a pertinent design problem and develop a full design brief and site. This should be, as much as possible, based on real projects and needs of Eskan Bank however, the committee has the power and duty to make the necessary alterations to fit the students learning outcomes, market needs, contemporary housing trends, or any other conditions.

The Design Brief is developed by the Eskan Bank Committee with the support of the coordinator of Architectural Design V, in the months of May, June and early September, before the beginning of each academic year.

The same committee is also responsible to determined alongside the Design brief, the schedule of events, venues, awards, for the following year.

The design brief, alongside with all site information, is given to the students between the 2nd week of September and 2nd week of October in a ceremony organized by the Eskan Bank Committee.

A site visit should be organized by Eskan Bank to help the students get acquainted with the site.

All information will be displayed in the Eskan Bank Award Website.

The Eskan Bank Committee will work alongside the coordinator of Design V to make sure all questions and doubts about the design brief and site are answered.

The design competition is divided in two stages. Stage one correspond to the preliminary development of a design proposal within architectural design V studio, of the B.Arch in Architecture, Department of Architecture and Interior Design, College of Engineering, University of Bahrain. At the end of the semester, a maximum of 40 participants are shortlisted amongst all Design V sections, to participate in  Stage 02 of the competition, the final design stage.

STAGE 01

Stage 01 is a preliminary design stage targeting the architecture students enrolled at the university of Bahrain:

1.1 Who can Participate: The competition is addressed to 400 level students of architecture at the College of Engineering, Department of Architecture and Interior Design.

1.2 Preliminary Design: The students of Architectural Design V will have the opportunity to develop their design proposal within the course, during semester 01. This is not the competition but rather the preliminary development with the support of the design instructors.

1.3 Preliminary Selection: In the end of the semester, each instructor of Design V, selected 4 to 5 students to participate in Stage 02 of the competition. The selection criteria should be a combination of 3 main parameters: 

  1. The best student performance of the semester: normally reveled boy the final jury grade;

  2. The projects with more potential in terms of design challenge and critical thinking;

  3. The students that are eager and willing to work for the competition. The instructor should inquire the students about their willingness to participate in the competition. In case of a negative answers, the instructor has the option of not nominating a lesser number or inviting other student to participate.

1.4 Each instructor must submit the list of selected students  maximum 2 weeks after the design jury alongside with the following information in excel format:

1.5 Until the end of the semester the Eskan Bank Committee must announce the list of selected students to participate in the Eskan Bank Competition. This has to be done in the form of a list with all selected students to be shared with Eskan Bank, Design Instructors and participants.

STAGE 02

Stage 02 corresponds to the Eskan Bank Competition per se, where the shortlisted students are asked to developed a final matured design proposal.

 

2.1 Schedule:

The Eskan Bank award participants will have approximately one month to develop their design proposals to satisfy the design brief and competition regulations. The competition calendar is announced on the competition website and by email communications alongside updated venue and timing details.

 

2.2 Submission Requirements:

Submission requirements are divided between competition entry and project entry.​

- Competition Entry Requirements: all students must fully comply with the following items:

  • Application form filled and Signed;

  • Personal photo (digital 1MB, formal photo);

  • Short CV;

  • USB with all the above + design proposal panels.

           - Project Entry Requirements: every year the Eskan Bank Committee will announce the specific requirements for the Design Project.

2.3 Submission Format:

The submission must be in the form of 6 A1 sheets, landscape, glued over 3 mm foam board. Students must provide the way to support the panels.

2.3 Template:

The participants must follow a given template developed every year by the Eskan Bank Committee. All submissions that fail to comply with the template will not be accepted.

NOTE: All submissions that fail to submit on time, fail to submit all the competition entry or project entry requirements, submission format, or submission template will be rejected.
